The role of head builder
In ancient Greece, the very first architects were actually the leading stonemasons on large buildings such as temples (‘arkhitekton’ being a Greek word meaning ‘head builder’). From the very beginning, then, the role of an architect was very practical and hands-on. It was also one of leadership.
At Studio Nine, we know a good architect must be able to draw. But there are other vital disciplines that he or she must also draw on including technology, science, economy and even diplomacy as well as art and imagination.
