After a busy start to the year, we’re excited to finally share some big news..
There were many things to celebrate on our last day in the studio for 2020, including a very special announcement — the promotion of Interior Designer Marcia Liew to Associate.
Marcia joined Studio Nine as a Senior Interior Designer in May 2018, following her move back to her hometown of Adelaide after 14 years living abroad. She has since led the interior design of a number of large multi-residential projects, including the $70M COMO Norwood Mall Redevelopment, award-winning Third Avenue Development and the bespoke George & Queen residences (shown below).
With a career working in both large international firms and sole practitioners in Melbourne, Singapore and Hong Kong, her journey began a little differently than most.
“I began studying Fashion at RMIT in Melbourne and working in protective clothing product development”, she says. “A few years in, I travelled to Singapore to visit my brother and ended up interning at his friends Interior Design firm that focussed on hospitality work. They offered me a full-time position, where my role focussed around FF&E. The experience made me realise I wanted to study Interior Design, so after 8 months I moved back to Melbourne and enrolled in a course.”
Marcia went on to complete her Diploma of Interior Design, signing up to a mentor program in her second year which led to working with a sole practitioner Interior Decorator.
“After a while I decided I wanted to move to a bigger firm and work on large scale hospitality projects, as I had in Singapore,” she said. Marcia set her sights on a global design studio and reached out to them until a position became available. “It was a big learning curve and training ground for me, opening my eyes to international work.” The position took her to Hong Kong for a stint, before returning to Melbourne and moving on to further hospitality, retail and high-end residential work at another firm.
“Moving back to Adelaide, I was looking for an opportunity to work on diverse projects and somewhere I could grow within a business —Studio Nine was the clear option.”
During her time at Studio Nine, Marcia’s worked across the hospitality, residential and commercial sectors, with a focus on multi-residential work.
“Before Studio Nine I didn’t have a lot of experience in multi-res. But when the opportunity to lead the interior design in our multi-res team was presented to me by the Directors, I was excited by the idea of creating quality high-density living that people want to be a part of. It’s a chance to really change Adelaide’s perception of what that is.”
“Currently, I’m working on the tender package for COMO.” The large-scale commercial and residential redevelopment of the Norwood Mall (shown above) is the largest in Studio Nine’s portfolio and a pivotal role for Marcia at the studio. “I’ve taken on a more senior role with significant responsibility, managing our ID team, working with consultants and the multiple user groups. The project starting on site this year will be a huge milestone for me.”
And when asked about the future… “I’m looking forward to continuing to build the Studio Nine portfolio and really be sector leaders at the forefront of multi-residential design.”
Congratulations Marcia — a well-deserved appointment!
