Senior Associate & Architect Benjamin Pitman Announced as Juror on AIA Awards

Senior Associate, Benjamin Pitman has been selected on the 2024 SA Architecture Awards Juror in the Interior Architecture category. With over 22 years of experience and an award-winning Architect himself, Ben specialises in residential, multi-residential, commercial, and public projects.

What led you to be involved in this year’s SA Architecture Awards program?

Having moved back from living interstate for the last 20 years, I’ve been eager to immerse myself in the South Australian Architecture and Design scene. I’m very passionate about my hometown, so I’m thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of something which showcases the talent in our state. This will also be my first time as an awards juror, which is exciting.

As an Architect, what drew you to partake in the Interiors category?

Having had a lead-design role for much of my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a broad range of project types. I felt this experience would lend itself to the interiors category as the entries can often represent the full spectrum of work in our industry. This becomes an interesting challenge to adjudicate as I’m sure all the projects will be vastly different and unique in their own way.

What are you most looking forward to and hoping for from this year’s awards?

Seeing the quality and range of work and being inspired by our local talent. I’m also particularly looking forward to seeing some of the residential projects on offer. Having been involved in many new home projects, I can appreciate the complexity of the client / architect relationship and I am intrigued to see the creativity which shines through.

You’ve worked on numerous award-winning projects, tell us about a key project / favourite project and why you believe it was award-worthy?

Projects that win awards are typically ones where there’s something unmeasurable about them. Many projects tick boxes but it’s the ones that have an undeniable soul which really hit the mark. A project that comes to mind is from early on in my career when I was working for another practice. It was a new home entered into the Western Australia Architecture Awards. The project won the Residential category, however it also went on to win the ‘best project of the year’, so that was a career highlight for sure.
