The Calyx Project Recognised in Australia’s International Good Design Awards for Excellence in Design and Innovation
The Calyx Project by Forage Built received a prestigious Good Design Award Winner Accolade in the Architectural Design category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.
The winners of Australia’s peak international design awards were announced on Friday 8 September at the 2023 Australian Good Design Awards in front of more than 1000 guests from the design and architecture community.
The Calyx Project aims to break the cycle of homelessness through an innovative 16sqm transitional housing solution with a community focus. Demonstrating how architecture can resolve complex social issues, the project’s key difference is its level of engagement from the community – successfully utilising built form to raise awareness and funds.
Designed by Managing Director Andrew Steele, each pod sleeps one, with an ensuite, small kitchen, porch area and ample storage space. The compact design is a dignified place to call home.
Intended to make an impact, specific consideration was given to the use of white externally — environmentally sound due to its high solar reflectance, standing out within an urban setting and symbolising new beginnings. The interior is unexpected, generous in space and approachable to successfully achieve the feeling of home.
“To be recognised with an Australian Good Design Award tells the world this project not only represents design excellence, but it also surpasses the criteria for design innovation and design impact. The Good Design Award is an independent endorsement of professional design quality,” said Dr. Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia and Chair of the Australian Good Design Awards.
The Good Design Awards Jury spent two days at the Sydney Opera House discussing and debating which projects should be recognised with the prestigious Good Design Award accolade.
S9 are honoured to have received this award by the highly regarded national awards program.
