The project has now received $26 million in federal funding to commence construction, led by the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation to address complex, unmet wellbeing needs in Northern Adelaide — one of the state’s fastest-growing and most diverse regions.
The new WCH Foundation Family Health and Wellbeing Hub is located in Elizabeth Vale South Australia, and is designed to de-institutionalise traditional healthcare architecture, steering away from conventional clinical aesthetics.
Gently curved facades and arches, soften the built form, to resemble a public, community building opposed to a healthcare facility. Earthy colour tones and extensive landscaping embody the concept of re-wilding, blending natural elements with the built environment to create a physical and psychological oasis.
Vegetation plays a dual role, providing both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits. A verdant façade acts as a natural sunscreen, mitigating the western sun while enhancing the calming, inviting ambiance. The integration of greenery supports the project's broader goal: to be a place where people want to spend time, fostering wellbeing through both design and nature.
The multi-purpose hub accommodates a wide range of integrated services, including early parenting programs, perinatal and adolescent mental health support, student-led allied health clinics, and accommodation for new mothers adjacent to the Lyell McEwin Hospital. Public spaces like community lounges, youth areas, and indoor playgrounds are designed for flexibility, encouraging year-round community engagement beyond traditional healthcare services.
As one ascends through the building, spaces transition from public to private, thoughtfully balancing the need for openness with areas of refuge and discretion. This multi-layered approach reflects the complex needs of its diverse user base, providing a cohesive, supportive environment for families and individuals.
Through thoughtful design and a commitment to accessibility, the Family Health and Wellbeing Hub is set to become a cornerstone of Elizabeth Vale's Playford Health and Wellbeing Precinct.
