Located beneath Melbourne’s iconic Flinders Street Station, Miss Gunn’s Basement Bar is a hidden gem that seamlessly extends the character and history of Clocks at Flinders Street
Building on the success of previous collaborations with our longstanding client, this subterranean space has been carefully transformed from an unused storage facility into an intimate and atmospheric retreat.
The design approach focused on continuity—ensuring the new space felt like an inherent extension of its upstairs counterpart. Dark, moody tones and low lighting create a Louisiana club-inspired ambiance, while retained floorboards and exposed materials reinforce the venue’s established feel. A discreet entry and speakeasy aesthetic invite guests into a space that feels both exclusive and timeless.
Originally documented in 2016 with plans to roll out in 2018, the project faced delays due to budget constraints and the impact of the pandemic. With renewed momentum in 2024, the project was revisited and adapted to meet contemporary standards before being successfully delivered.
Honouring the site’s storied past, the design preserves its original bluestone and brick foundations, with convict-chiselled stonework adding to the rich textural narrative. Once rumoured to have been a holding bay for coffins, the space presented significant heritage and structural challenges, requiring delicate excavation and close collaboration with key stakeholders, including heritage consultants, the Port of Melbourne, and the Flinders Street Station Authority.
Miss Gunn’s is more than a bar—it’s an immersive experience steeped in history, offering a refined yet welcoming escape for Melbourne’s professionals, tourists, and eventgoers. A carefully curated menu complements the venue’s rich aesthetic, featuring signature cocktails inspired by the era of its namesake, Ada May Gunn.
